President Yoweri Museveni has directed the trade minister Amelia Kyambadde to ensure that sugar factories and the importers do not to sell sugar to politicians or individuals.

President Yoweri Museveni has directed the trade minister Amelia Kyambadde to ensure that sugar factories and importers do not to sell sugar to politicians or individuals.
Below is the statement issued on Tuesday by the Presidential Press Secretary. It’s copied to the Vice- President, Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi and Inspector General of Police, Kale Kayihura.
This is to require the minister of trade to direct all the sugar factories in Uganda as well as the sugar importers recently licensed not to sell sugar to politicians or any other individuals because, apparently, some of these are greedy speculators who charge exorbitant prices to consumers.
I hear that some of them even import the sugar after they have arm-twisted manufacturers to allocate them sugar just like the Amin ministers used to do.
In my broadcasts, I tasked about forming NRM companies to fight this speculation. I did not mean individual politicians of any shade, nor did i mean that any group should profit from speculation.
The sugar producers should use their own trusted agents who will, faithfully, reflect the genuine market prices, not the extortionate ones.
Through the imports of sugar already authorized and increased production, we are going to overcome this problem as we did in the past.
The Inspector General of Police should even look into the law, guided by the Attorney General, to see how these speculators can be disciplined.
If the Vice- President is not yet in station, the Prime Minister and the minister of trade should execute this directive.
The acting Presidential Press Secretary and the State House press unit should give this order maximum publicity.
Politicians should buy from retailers like everybody else. We are not only going to solve the problem of sugar as we did in the past, but also the other outstanding challenges such as energy and eventually, employment.
It is, again, the privilege of the NRM to solve these problems as we did before in spite of the very bad international economic situation and some internal sabotage by some NRM elements.
Fortunately, the problem of Uganda is high demand rather than constricted consumption. We should produce more and process everything that is not consumed fresh.
There are very many companies in India that are ready to invest in processing our agro products and minerals. There are already surplus stocks of processed milk for which am negotiating market access to the Indian market.
What has been done with milk, can be done with many other products.
