Then and Now

In the colonial era there were three categories of roads in Uganda; central government roads, local/districts roads (which were responsibility of the state), Kabaka of Buganda roads, and community roads.

Uganda had 9,000 miles of murram roads and 738 miles of bitumen roads in December 1961. Today, Uganda’s road network comprises about 65,800 paved and gravel roads of which 20,000km are national, 13,000km district, 2,800km urban and 30,000km of community roads.
