The Chief Minister, Mr. Benedict Kiwanuka and two members of the Uganda Legislative Council (Legco), Mr. J.H Obonyo & Mr. E.B Bwambale arrived in Washington and met President Kennedy at the White House and Mr. Dean Rusk, the Secretary of State.

Mr. Kiwanuka held a press conference where he said Uganda looked towards the US as a city which would help Uganda more than any other to achieve economic strength. He saw Uganda’s chief needs as education and economic diversification. Asked whether Uganda would be neutral in world affairs, Mr. Kiwanuka said he considered no African nation in a real position to remain neutral.

Uganda will support what it considered right, ‘not just because it is this block or that block ‘, he said. ‘If we stick to this principle of standing up for the right, many of our problems will be easier’. Mr. Kiwanuka had earlier gone to New York to meet officials at the United Nations.
