Children should be helped to become orderly. Orderliness is taught at home and not school. Keeping one’s property in an accessible place and organised is key to leading a successful life.

Children should be helped to become orderly. Orderliness is taught at home and not school. Keeping one’s property in an accessible place and organised is key to leading a successful life. An organised person is pleasant to live with.

Some children are naturally orderly, while others need to work on it. For children to be orderly, parents need to patiently work with the child until they learn the skill.
Here are steps you can take to teach your children how to be organised:

Work on your own orderliness: Start taking small steps toward orderliness, your sitting room and bedroom. It is a process and not an event. Depending on how disorganised you are, it will take time and commitment to turn your house around but do not give up.

Start training the children early: You do not have to wait until you are well-organised before you start helping your children. It can be a great adventure, while you work on your personal development your children are also working on theirs.

Find a place for everything: Be it a needle, books, cutlery, crockery or a washing machine, everything must have its own place. When you find a permanent abode for everything in your home, you would have taken another step to being orderly.  This is helpful also for forgetful children as they will be able to remember everything.

Be patient: Change does not happen at a supersonic speed. It is slow, but once mastered, there is usually no turning back.  Do not lose heart even when you fail. You will always win if you do not give up.

Instruct your children to pick up their things and put them in their place. You could also let them clean up after meals, wipe up their messes and clean up their room.
l Look into their school books: Help them with improving their handwriting if it is poor. Look at the way they are arranging their work and help them to do it better. Orderliness and order must also extend to their school.
