Who is the LDC answerable to?

EDITOR: The Law Development Centre (LDC) is currently the only institution that trains advocates in Uganda. For a lawyer who has graduated from a recognised university to be able to practise law in Uganda, she or he must have a diploma in legal practice.

EDITOR: The Law Development Centre (LDC) is currently the only institution that trains advocates in Uganda. For a lawyer who has graduated from a recognised university to be able to practise law in Uganda, she or he must have a diploma in legal practice.

This magic qualification can only be obtained from LDC. What is interesting though is the way this has turned into torture for many. For instance, lawyers who joined LDC in the 2008/2009 intake, graduated exactly a year after completing their course! Those who completed last month do not know their fate yet.
You need not ask if the 2010/2011 students have completed their studies because they sure have. In fact, the intake for 2011/2012 sat for the LDC pre-entry examinations on August 16.

The question on most lawyers’ and other stakeholders’ minds is, what exactly is so unique or wrong with LDC? Who is LDC answerable to?

Who does LDC fear or respect? As far as we know, it is generally understood and obvious that the Uganda National Examinations Board, registered nurses, technical institutions, or even universities and other established institutions have a period within which they release their results.

In case of any delays, the relevant offices will be very quick to apologise and let the public know when to expect them and why they have delayed.

But with the 'mighty' LDC, the students/lawyers must wait in fear, anxiety and unemployment for lack of a clear position until the wonderful institution chooses and feels comfortably ready to release the results! I will not get into the discussion of the failure rate as that shall take another day but why we continue tolerating this nonsense only God knows.

Can anything be done about this? Students have attempted seeking court intervention for some of their grievances only to be met with some 'Mafia' sabotaging the whole process.

If only there was communication from LDC, the public would appreciate that their concerns are understood.

Students and other stakeholders have become used to the ever-changing rumours that have come to characterise LDC.

One wonders whether or not LDC has no public relations office. But since we have never heard from them, it is safe to assume none exists.

At this point, only God can redeem LDC and we shall continue to hope that someday, sanity, discipline and transparency shall reign! Does the Uganda law Council, by any chance have an opinion about this state of affairs at LDC? We simply cannot continue like this!
