OPPOSITION parties have called for an independent body to review salaries of civil servants.

Addressing journalists separately yesterday, FDC and DP both called for the streamlining of the salaries.

Speaking at the party headquarters in Kampala, DP boss Norbert Mao wondered why some workers have the same salary scale, but earn different amounts depending on the sector.

He supported teachers, lecturers and doctors’ strikes as constitutional, adding that the Government threat to sack the strikers was unacceptable.

Mao said they are ready to defend any teacher who will be dismissed illegally.

He also supported Parliament’s move to cut budgets across the board to increase teachers’ salary, but called on MPs to be exemplary by reducing their own salaries.

Mao also wants an early warning system to detect future calamities in the Elgon areas and elsewhere.

Mao said DP meets in Entebbe today to discuss rising commodity prices.

FDC’s deputy spokesperson Toterebuka Bamwenda said the party would set up a commission to review the salary structures and advise the Government accordingly.

“There is a very big disparity in the salary structure in this country. You find people earning sh270,000 each month, while others earn sh43m. Others have the same salary scales, but earn different amounts. What brings about that?” he asked.

He asked the Government to expeditiously address the problem instead of using a forceful approach on teachers.

Bamwenda said forcing teachers back to class threatens the quality of education.

On the issue of evicting vendors from Kampala streets, Bamwenda said the Kampala Capital City Authority should provide an alternative place for the vendors to avoid insecurity.

On Monday, KCCA evicted street vendors citing the need for order in the city.
