SYLVIA Namutebi, 23, was Saturday night crowned Miss Uganda 2011 at the Golf Course Hotel in Kampala. She takes over from Heyzme Nansubuga.

Namutebi beat 18 hopefuls, having gained advantage during the question-and-answer sessions, where she gave the most coherent answers.

Along with her crown came a new Toyota Spacio, a year’s supply of hair products and a slot to represent Uganda at the Miss World pageant in London come November.

Crowned by Brenda Nanyonjo of Kezzi Entertainment, the license holder of the Miss Uganda Pageant, the statuesque beauty, after making it to the top 10, shone through the next stages.

Answering questions from the judges’, she exuded confidence where the other girls fumbled. She impressed especially more when she said if given a huge sum of cash, she would invest it wisely to serve her community.

She was a clear favourite of the crowd from the start. When she made Top Five, it became evident she would win, as the others couldn’t measure up.

Primativa Aliguma, a student of Ndejje University, was first runner-up, and got a 15-decimal plot of land. Fifteen decimals fit a four-bedroom house. She was also named Miss Popularity, winning sh1m, while 24-year-old Amy Nandasi was second runner-up, winning a sh1.2 million Samsung phone.

Before crowning the winner, a visibly emotional Nanyonjo took us back to when she set out on the task, people asking her why she would jump onto a sinking ship, as Miss Uganda had lost its glory. But she, along with her team, pulled it off.

The production was great, with the venue filling to capacity; revellers even missed seats. The seven judges included South African Airways’ Yogi Birigwa, Visual Artist and Consultant Nuwa Wamala-Nnyanzi and Magloire Kindoki of French Development Agency.

Joy Doreen Biira and Shawn Kimuli of NBS TV hosted the event, as did comedian Patrick Idringi, who doubled as entertainment for the night with a series of rib-cracking jokes

. He indeed was a blessing to the event, for he prepared well for his stint. Musicians Benon Mugumya, Grace Nakimera and Tonix also performed on the night.

Profile

  • She is a graduate of Makerere University Business School, with a degree in Human Resources Management. Before taking part in the contest, she was working at Arms of Grace.

  • Born to Paul Ssekuwanda of Wakiso. Namutebi is the third of five children. Her mother is deceased.

  • She loves sports, adventure and watching documentaries.

  • Her reason to contest in the race? She believed that winning the pageant would give her influence to impact the lives of the youth, especially through changing their attitudes.

  • “In the next five years, I hope to set up a recreation centre for the youth, where they can be equipped with knowledge and given a chance to exploit their creativity,” she says.
  • As Miss Uganda, Namutebi will be working with many charity organisations. She says one of the things she wishes to do is help set up a maternity ward at St Francis Hospital in Jinja.
“We visited it during boot camp and there is a real need for the people in that community.” But first, she will be giving us a real shot at the title for Miss World come November in London.

  • Her strategy, she says, will be to stand out by putting Ugandan tradition and culture to the forefront, which will be her identity. “I’ll carry a gomesi, I’ll kneel when I greet people etc, so that I can be different from the other girls and give us a real chance at the title.”
