How durable is asphalt produced by hand?

EDITOR: It is absurd to still find some local contractors producing asphalt concrete by hand. Asphalt is a product of sizeable grades of crushed stones; stone/quarry dust; mineral filler mixed with bitumen in different ratios according to a particular design.

I wonder how the bitumen and the other constituents of asphalt are catered for in terms of quantity; quality and temperature when the concrete is manually produced.

I, therefore, call upon the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to bail out companies without asphalt-producing facilities.

UNRA's response: Manual production of asphalt/heating of bitumen is usually done by small companies engaged in maintenance work like patching of potholes.

The big companies on major projects have asphalt plants where ratios of the constituents are set and uncompromised. UNRA and the Ministry of Works are working together to create forums where the large contractors can work together with the small ones in joint partnerships for material and technological transfer.
