US - The UN Security Council on Friday extended an embargo on arms shipments to Sudan's Darfur region, prolonging a measure that has seen frequent reported violations.
The resolution, which the Council passed unanimously, renews until September 12, 2026, the sanctions regime in place since 2005. It includes travel bans and asset freezing for five individuals, along with the arms embargo.
"The situation in Darfur remains dire, with widespread violence, severe humanitarian challenges, and mass displacement," said John Kelley, a US representative to the United Nations.
"This adoption sends the clear message the international community remains focused on stemming the flow of arms and promoting accountability for those who perpetuate violence and instability in Darfur," he added.
According to diplomatic sources, some countries sought to expand the area covered by the measures to include the region of Kordofan.
But Russia, which has veto powers on the Council, categorically opposed this idea.
Since April 2023, war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has left tens of thousands of people dead and created the world's largest hunger and displacement crises.
