A man suspected of stealing a solar panel and three metallic solar stands has been arrested in Soroti city.

James Okello, a resident of Kigandani cell, Kengere ward in Soroti City East Division, was arrested by Police after a tipoff.

Police said a concerned resident informed them that a group of people were selling solar panels and pillars believed to have been stolen from Moruapesur and Kigandani cells.

Damalie Nachuha, the East Kyoga Police commander, dispatched a team from the flying squad and criminal investigations department to verify the information.

During the presser Friday Morning, Nachuha confirmed that the main suspect Okello was arrested and two metallic solar stands and one solar panel were recovered from his home.

She said Okello led them to another home in Amen B in Soroti City West Division, where the Police recovered another metallic stand. But the suspect of that home reportedly took off.

“The place where the solar panel was picked is yet to be investigated but this case of theft has been registered under SD Reference number 20/24/04/2024," said Nachuha.

Police also said they are still hunting for a security guard in connection with Tuesday morning's botched robbery at Equity Bank's Soroti branch.

The morning incident resulted in the arrest of the two suspects: a security guard and his supervisor, who work for Security Group Africa, a private company.

Sam Kwebaza, the security company’s regional manager for eastern, said Richard Oonyu was deployed Monday night alongside his colleague Emmanuel Epunao to guard the bank.

However, Oonyu was not present Tuesday Morning when the Police responded to reports of an attempted robbery.

“We have tried reaching him but his phone is off,” Nachuha told reporters.

Both the security and the bank said no items and money were stolen during the foiled robbery.

The bank's officials have confirmed that banking services have since resumed normally.
