The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has directed the minister
for disaster preparedness to work closely with the House Committee on budget to avail resources for disaster response.

Among's directives follow Meteorological reports that predict that heavy rains currently affecting Kenya and Tanzania will likely spread to Uganda.

"As a result, I urge the Minister responsible for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees to activate early warning systems and efficient response strategies. Furthermore, since we are currently in the process of budget appropriations for 2024/2025, I suggest that the Minister works with the Budget Committee to ensure that adequate financial resources are allocated to Disaster response and management," the Speaker said on Monday, May 6, 2024.

In recent weeks, the House has expressed concerns about the importance of being prepared for disasters considering the changing climate.

Last week, some parts of Uganda suffered landslides that occurred in some regions of Western Uganda due to heavy rainfall.
