“Even after blow drying it, the hair soon coils and gets mildly tangled together,” she says.

The easiest natural way to detangle the hair is to run your fingers through it. They are soft and quickly feel for any knots, easily separating them.

Whether it is during wash day or just a styling session before heading out the door, tangled hair can be painful and cause delay.

Natural hair has the uncanny habit of getting tangled. In that state, it is difficult to manipulate and easily snaps and breaks, leading to hair loss.

Dawn Kirabo, a mother of three who wears her hair naturally, had been sick for two weeks, during which her hair suffered neglect.

“I didn’t comb it in my bedridden state." The sweat from the fever clamped it and it, smelled of medicine. The few times I had a little energy I shampooed it and left it to air dry. When I got better, I had a tangled mess on my head with the tips breaking. The detangling process took me an entire evening,” she says.

Jennifer Nansamba a hairdresser says that is the reason most people straighten their natural hair either by chemically treating it, or using heat on it.

“Even after blow drying it, the hair soon coils and gets mildly tangled together,” she says.

Nansamba says that detangling hair helps reduce breakage and eases manageability.

There are many effective tools one can use to detangle hair, especially before shampooing or during the wash process.

Fingers.

The easiest natural way to detangle the hair is to run your fingers through it. They are soft and quickly feel for any knots, easily separating them.

Wide-toothed comb

The y are handy when separating detangled hair. Nansamba says the wide teeth easily run through the hair as compared to smaller toothed combs and cause minimal breakage or damage

Denman Brush

It is very good for separating the tight curls, especially at the tips of the hair. Nansamba says the tips grow old and are more susceptible to dryness and tangling so when using this kind of brush start from the tips and work your way to the roots

Paddle brush

With its soft padded interior brush, a puddle brush is great for blow drying. The rounded tips shield the hair from too much traction as they detangle it.

Tangle teezer

With its little pointed teeth, the tangle teezer works very well even for combing conditioner and product through it to allow for even distribution as well.
