One person has been shot dead and several injured on Thursday (earlier today) in an incident in Mawogola North during the Local Council Five (LC5) and mayoral elections.
Local sources stated that the deceased was related to the district councillor, Joseph Rubajyema.
Several incidents of violence during the district elections in the area have been recorded by the police.
In some cases, voters interrupted polling, citing rigging. Violent scenes were reported at Mitima polling station between Mijwala and Lugusulu sub-counties in Ssembabule district.
The Ssembabule district returning officer, Gracious Aryeija, confirmed incidents of the clashes in Ssembabule but declined to provide further details.
The New Vision has since learnt that the body of the Mawigola victim was still at Byansi hospital in Masaka city.
Countrywide reports indicate that the voter turnout was very low.
The low turnout was attributed to inadequate voter mobilisation and a sense of voter disillusionment following the recent presidential and parliamentary elections.
Many polling stations registered significantly fewer voters compared to the presidential and parliamentary elections held on January 15.
