PAKWACH - Shaban Ofoi Kinobe of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) has emerged victorious in the Pakwach LC5 election.
Ofoi won with 17,961 votes while his closest challenger, Gibiriel Fred Oryekwun, a secondary school headteacher, got 13,325 votes.
Other contestants, all independents, included: Peter Kercan, Openja Tingo, Richard Orieda and Wilfred Thogang.
Following his poll victory, Ofoi struck a conciliatory tone after claiming that his opponents waged smear campaigns against him.
"We can't continue like this as the people of Jonam, calling each other names just because of an election. This sets a bad precedence," he said.
He thanked his supporters for staying by his side all the way to the very end of the election.
Ofoi, who currently works at the NRM secretariat, attributed his victory to party grassroots structures in the different sub-counties.
He also said bringing on board influential people like Robert Steen Omito of Alwi sub-county bolstered his campaign.
