SERERE - Eng. Martin Onguruco National Resistance Movement (NRM) has triumphed in the Serere district LC5 election with a landslide victory.
He won with 61,459 votes, with his closest challenger, Felix Samson Ecor of the Democratic Front (DF) party, in distant second with 12,323 votes.
The other candidates, Joseph Linos Opio of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Jimmy Alex Edotu of the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) got 2,438 votes and 817 votes, respectively.
Towards 11pm, Edotu left the tally centre, alleging that some of his supporters had been turned away from certain polling stations.
The tallying process faced intermittent power outages in a district of seven sub-counties and eight town councils.
Onguruco, who has previously contested for the Serere County MP seat twice, is now set to replace FDC's Stephen Ochola, who contested for the Serere County parliamentary seat last week and finished third.
Ronald Nsereko, the Serere district returning officer, formally announced Onguruco's victory at the district headquarters tally centre just before 4am on Friday.
