All the three National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary candidates in Hoima district have been declared winners by the Electoral Commission.
Gerald Kasigwa, who won the Kigorobyo County parliamentary seat, was yesterday morning declared winner by Hassan Takwena, the Hoima district returning officer.
Kasigwa polled 12,175 votes, beating his rival David Karubanga, who got 8,793 votes. Karubanga was the incumbent MP, but lost the NRM primary elections to Kasigwa and stood as an independent. National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Crispus Mugisa trailed with 829 votes.
In Bugahya County, the NRM flag-bearer, Pius Wakabi, was declared winner with 30,923 votes, beating Herbert Kato of Alliance for National Transformation, who got 3,373 votes. In third position was Allan Tugume, who polled 6,091 votes.
For the Hoima District Woman parliamentary seat, NRM’s Beatrice Wembabazi was declared winner with 35,511 votes after beating Harriet Businge Mugenyi, the incumbent, who got 14,725 votes. Mugenyi lost to Wembabazi in the primaries and stood as an independent.
Another independent, Suzan Asiimwe, polled 5,579 votes, while NUP’s Vena Mulindwa trailed with 3,381 votes.
Wakabi said he was happy to be declared winner and attributed his victory to the NRM support in Hoima and team work among the party mobilisers in the district.
Wakabi said his focus will be to continue lobbying for improved access to service delivery in the constituency.
In the past two terms, Wakabi has been sailing through unopposed. This was the first time to get competitors. In Hoima, the elections where largely peaceful with no cases of violence recorded in several parts of the district.
