NRM candidate wins after seven attempts in Katakwi

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has won most of the parliamentary seats in Teso sub-region, according to results released at different districts yesterday.

In Katakwi district’s Toroma County, the NRM flag-bearer, Solomon Alemu Ossiya, was declared the winner with a landslide victory after contesting seven times for the same seat without success.

Ossiya defeated nine candidates to take the day. The final results were announced by the Katakwi district returning officer, Stephen Makubuya, yesterday morning.

Ossiya’s win

The results showed that Ossiya garnered 10,044 votes, beating his closes rival and incumbent Joseph Andrew Koluo (independent), who got 5,778 votes.

Walter Elakas Okiring (independent) got 4,895 votes; John Robert Ekongot got 1,310 votes; Stephen Okello (independent) got 788 votes; Benjamin Akiso, the National Unity Platform (NUP) flag-bearer, got 88 votes; Allan Aporu (independent) got 66 votes, Julius Eupet (independent) got 60 votes; Mark Paul Ikwap of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) got 59 votes; while Ben Berenado Okiror (independent) got 54 votes.

More NRM victories

In Usuk County, still within Katakwi, the NRM flag bearer, Richard Ongorok, was declared winner after beating the incumbent, Bosco Okiror, in the highly contested race. Out of the 16,470 valid votes counted, Ongorok garnered 7,873 votes, closely followed by Okiror with 7,623 votes. Charles Okideny (independent) got 572 votes, FDC candidate Alex Epel got 42 votes, while Democratic Party’s Simon Peter Ogulo got 16 votes. A total of 344 votes were invalid.

Significant losses

In Serere district, Esther Lucy Acom, an independent candidate, trounced fisheries state minister Hellen Adoa in a hotly contested district Woman MP race.

Still in Serere, Peter Paul Emaju (NRM) beat the long time serving Kasilo County MP, Elijah Okupa (FDC), to the seat. In Serere County, Emmanuel Omoding (NRM) also bounced back.

Josephine Pedun (NRM) was announced as the new Woman MP for Ngora district after unseating FDC’s Stella Apolot Isodo.

Pedun got 17,010 votes, while Isodo got 11,334 votes. Other contestants; Abeja Christine of the Democratic Front got 12,152 votes, while Rhoda Amuge of NUP got 437 votes.

Back to parliament

For Ngora constituency, Juliet Achayo Lodou bounced back after garnering 15,077 votes, she was being challenged by David Abala, an independent candidate, who got 6,424 votes. NUP’s Mohammed Osuguguru got 269 votes.

In Kapir County in Ngora, Dr Isamat Abraham of the NRM maintained his seat after garnering 7,046 votes, followed by Julius Engeku (independent) with 6,271.

James Oleja (independent) got 4,073 votes, Julius Ichoto of the Democratic Front got 725 votes, Simon Abachu (NUP) got 104 votes, David Okurut (FDC) got 816 votes, while Ben Ochan of People’s Front for Freedom got 134 votes.

Unopposed

In Bukedea district, Patrick Opolot Isiagi also bounces back unopposed as the Kachumbala County MP. In the Woman MP race, Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among also reclaimed her seat after she was declared unopposed.

The Vice-President, Maj. (rtd) Jessica Rose Alupo, retained the Katakwi District Woman MP seat unopposed on the NRM ticket. This was after her only challenger, Angela Anuken (independent), opted out of the race on December 24, 2025.

Alupo won the NRM primaries with an 88.8% landslide victory, beating three opponents. These were Cecilia Anyakoit, Violet Akurut Adome and Anuken.

Ministers have also won

The state minister for sports, Peter Ogwang won the Ngariam County race, on the NRM ticket, and he is the incumbent area MP.

Ogwang was declared the winner yesterday at 8:27am after garnering 20,372 votes beating five other candidates to retain his seat.

Ogwang’s competitors were Daniel Mulalu (independent), who got 2,962 votes; Augustine Otuko (independent) got 1,952 votes; Michael Ochailap (NUP) got 144 votes; Ignatius Loyola Apuda (FDC) got 112 votes; while John Baptist Eidit (independent) got 148 votes.

Teso affairs state minister Dr Clement Kenneth Obote Ongalo won the Kalaki County MP race for the third term. Ongalo, who was the NRM flag-bearer, was declared the winner with 20,541 votes followed by independent candidate Samuel Okello who got 16,201 votes. Other candidates in the race included UPC’s Julius Eyadu and independents: Herbert Echelu, Edmond Ekeju, Davidson Elyau, and Dennis Echeru Emwonyu.
