Museveni vows drug theft crackdown, more teachers, end school fees

Museveni used the twin rallies to unveil a new package of promises, chief among them ending the small fees that parents continue to pay in government-aided schools, recruiting 50,000 additional teachers, and setting up a special anti-theft unit to tackle rampant drug pilferage in health facilities.

Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, used the twin rallies to unveil a new package of promises, chief among them ending the small fees that parents continue to pay in government-aided schools, recruiting 50,000 additional teachers, and setting up a special anti-theft unit to tackle rampant drug pilferage in health facilities.

“We are going to eliminate all these small charges in schools so that education is truly free. In addition, the Government will recruit 50,000 more teachers to reduce the burden on the current workforce,” Museveni declared, drawing loud applause from a sea of yellow-clad supporters at Amolatar Secondary School grounds.

The President also called for a shift towards day schooling across Uganda to reduce household expenses, describing it as “a more affordable and sustainable model.”

On health, Museveni vowed to root out drug theft, a problem that has long plagued public hospitals and health centers.

“We are establishing a special unit that will ensure medicines supplied to health facilities are not stolen or diverted. The sick must get what belongs to them,” he said.
