President Yoweri Museveni is today campaigning in Makindye and Nakawa divisions amid an early show of enthusiasm from National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters.
The President is scheduled to begin his Kampala engagements at the Buziga Islamic School playgrounds in Makindye Division before proceeding to the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) playgrounds in Nakawa Division.
By 11:00am in the morning, the grounds at Buziga were awash with yellow-clad supporters, young and old, many waving NRM flags and chanting party slogans as they waited for the President.
Popular musicians, including Stecia Mayanja, Gravity Omutujju, and Joseph Mayanja, kept the crowds entertained, turning the campaign grounds into a festive atmosphere.
Several NRM leaders from Kampala had also arrived early, among them Kampala Central Division Mayor Salim Uhuru, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, who addressed supporters ahead of the President’s address.
The rallies form part of President Museveni’s ongoing campaign engagements across the country, where he is wooing people to support NRM come January 15, 2026.
At the Makindye venue, leaders of special interest groups used the occasion to express support for the President while also presenting their expectations and demands.
Frederick Musisi Kantu, the chairman of the Disability Council for Makindye Division, said people with disabilities (PWDs) credit President Museveni for transforming their lives and giving them a voice in governance.
“We thank the President for what he has done for people with disabilities. He got us off the streets and made us like other people,” Musisi said.
He added that candidate Museveni ensured that they have leaders from LC1 up to Parliament, and said this is something they appreciate very much.
Musisi also cited several government programmes that he said have benefited PWDs, including the National Disability Grant under the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, as well as NAADS, Emyooga and the Parish Development Model (PDM).
“The money we receive through these programmes has helped us to develop,” he said, further reminding the President of a pledge to provide sh300 million to PWDs in each division of Kampala.
Although the funds have not yet been received, Musisi said the group remains hopeful. “We expect that the money will reach us, and our vote is for NRM, and it is a block vote. We ask that when he wins, he adds us more funds and fulfills the pledges,” he said.
Musisi added that PWDs are eager to benefit more from programmes like PDM by engaging in practical activities suited to their abilities.
Women leaders also expressed concerns and called for increased financial support to grassroots initiatives.
Winfred Nasanga, popularly known as Mama Single Mothers and the national chairperson of single mothers, thanked President Museveni for what she described as efforts to uplift women across the country.
“We thank him for uplifting women. We have formed SACCOs in every region, and we even have a national SACCO for single mothers,” she said.
She said the group now has structures down to the division level and appealed to the President to inject more funding into their savings and credit schemes to strengthen economic empowerment among single mothers.
“However, we need him to put money into our SACCOs because now we have structures everywhere,” she said.
Cultural and religious leaders also made their presence felt at the Makindye rally, highlighting peace and inclusion as key gains under the NRM government.
Nalongo Nansamba, a leader of traditional healers, said the peace prevailing in the country has enabled different groups to coexist freely and participate in public life.
“We thank God for the peace he has brought. That is why I have come here with other religious leaders,” she said.
She said traditional healers were previously marginalised but now feel more accepted in society.
“Before, they used not to see us as humans, but now we have peace and can mingle with other people,” she said, adding that traditional and cultural healers want formal recognition.
Nansamba came to the rally with two cows to present to President Museveni, saying it was a sign of appreciation and goodwill from herself and the traditional healers.
As supporters continued to stream into the venues, Speaker Among told the crowd that people that have not got PDM funds in the areas including Namuwongo will start getting the funds soon.
President Museveni is expected to use the rallies to outline his plans for Kampala, address concerns raised by local leaders and special interest groups, and rally support for the NRM ahead of the 2026 polls.
