President Yoweri Museveni is today, December 8, 2025,  campaigning in the districts of Kamwenge and Kyegegwa as he seeks another five-year term next year.

The two districts are National Resistance Movement (NRM) party strongholds, where whoever wins in the internal primaries is almost assured of sailing through the general election.

In the last general election, Museveni, the NRM Presidential candidate, polled 85,241 (94%) votes in Kamwenge while his main rival, Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform party, garnered 3,969 (4.4%).

In Kyegegwa, Museveni got 69,129 (84.8%) votes while Kyagulanyi received 10,656 (13.1%).

By the time of writing this story, Museveni was set to hold his first rally of the day at Kyabenda Primary School playground in Kahunge town council, Kamwenge, and his second and final political event at Sooba Primary School playground in Kyegegwa.

About the districts

Kamwenge has a population of 337,167 people, scattered across 18 sub-counties/town councils and 442 villages, while Kyegegwa has 501,120 inhabitants living in 19 sub-counties/town councils and 677 villages.

The biggest area of Kamwenge is covered by subsistence farmlands existing in all the sub-counties, according to the multi-hazard, risk and vulnerability profile for Kamwenge by the Office of the Prime Minister in Kampala.

The district is endowed with four conservation areas, including Queen Elizabeth National Park covering the biggest part west of the district, Kibale National Park covering the northern part of the district, Katonga Wildlife Reserve covering the northeast, and Kakasi Central Forest Reserve in the southern part of the district.

In Kyegegwa, district authorities say the natural vegetation, comprised of forests and swamps in the valley, has been destroyed as a result of rapid population growth and poverty, and hence replaced by gardens and other developments.

They say the district has a very high fertility rate of 7.8 children per woman, which is far above the rate of investment in service provision such as water, health and education.

The district also hosts refugees in Kyaka II refugee settlement camp and the authorities thank the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and other partners for the support beyond refugees to cover the host communities.

They pray that the partners cover the whole district because the impact of refugees has an effect on all the people of Kyegegwa.
