President Yoweri Museveni, who is seeking re-election, is today, December 23, 2025, set to campaign in the neighbouring districts of Gomba and Sembabule.
His first campaign rally of the day will be in Gomba at Nsambwe Primary School playground in Kyegonza sub-county, and his second and final political event in Sembabule at the district headquarters grounds.
This will be his eighth day in the central region after campaigning in the districts of Mubende, Kyankwanzi, Kiboga, Kassanda, Mityana, Rakai, Lyantonde, Lwengo, Kyotera, Kalangala, Kalungu, Masaka and Bukomansimbi.
In the last general election of 2021, Museveni, who is the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate and his party lost some ground to the National Unity Platform (NUP) party in both Gomba and Sembabule that were once seen as their major traditional strongholds.
Museveni polled 24,568 (45.43%) votes in Gomba while his chief rival, Kyagulanyi of NUP garnered 29,017 (53.66%). In Sembabule, Museveni got 45,234 (56.71%) votes while Kyagulanyi received 33, 524 (42.03%).
However, NUP grabbed two parliamentary seats from NRM in the two districts, that is Gomba East in Gomba and Mawogola South in Sembabule.
Gomba district was created in 2010 by an Act of Parliament, when Mpigi district was split into three districts: Gomba, Butambala and Mpigi.
Gomba has a population of 199,120 people scattered across nine sub-counties/town councils and 284 villages, while Sembabule has 305,971 inhabitants living in 17 sub-counties/town councils and 505 villages.
In the 2021 general election, Gomba had 81,314 registered voters. Out of these, 55,644 (68.3%) voted. In this election, Gomba now has a total of 100,253 voters and 252 polling stations, up from 208 in 2021.
Sembabule had 132,240 registered voters, and out of these, 82,054 (62.1%) voted. It now has a total of 153,318 voters and 431 polling stations, up from 286 in 2021.
Museveni, who has led Uganda uninterrupted since January 1986, is campaigning under the theme: “Protecting the Gains, Making a Qualitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status.”
The theme focuses on safeguarding achievements over the past 39 years, such as peace and development, while aiming to propel Uganda to a high middle-income status.
Other gains, include wealth creation initiatives, job opportunities, service delivery, market access, as well as, the East African political federation.
