President Yoweri Museveni is today, November 3, 2025, taking his 2026 re-election campaign to voters in the neighbouring districts of Serere and Soroti.
Serere was carved out of Soroti, which attained the status of the permanent headquarters of the Teso region in 1912, and became operational in July 2010.
Soroti attained this status as a result of a recommendation by Sir Frederick Jackson, after he was appointed the new Governor of Uganda.
Land is the principal natural resource these two districts are endowed with and forms the basis for development, through agricultural production.
Museveni, who people refer to as the ‘old man with a hat’, is seeking his seventh consecutive presidential term on the National Resistance Movement party ticket.
He will hold his first campaign event of the day in Serere and the second and final rally in Soroti City.
In the 2021 general election, Museveni garnered 34,590 (55.50%) votes in Soroti while his main rival, Robert Kyagulanyi of the National Unity Platform party, got 5,196 (8.34%). In Serere, Museveni got 38,555 (51.22%) votes and Kyagulanyi polled 6,013 (7.99%).
The incumbent President is campaigning for a seventh term under the theme: Protecting the Gains, Making a Qualitative Leap into High Middle-Income Status.
The theme focuses on safeguarding achievements in the last 39 years, such as peace and development, while aiming to propel Uganda to a high middle-income status.
