Museveni leads with 72% in sixth set of official presidential election results

Museveni has so far garnered 7,643,778 votes, which is 71.88% of the valid votes counted so far.

KAMPALA - Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni has maintained his lead on the second day of vote tallying, according to the latest official preliminary results released by the Electoral Commission (EC).

EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 17, 2026, said the total number of polling stations from which they have tallied results received so far is 47,299, representing 93.61% of the total number of polling stations across the country. 

Museveni has so far garnered 7,643,778 votes, which is 71.88% of the valid votes counted so far.

The other presidential candidates have so far received the following votes:

▪️ Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu of the National Unity Platform (NUP): 2,601,150 votes (24.46%)

▪️ James Nathan Nandala Mafabi of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC): 202,802 votes (1.91%)

▪️ Gregory Mugisha Muntu of Alliance for National Transformation (ANT): 57,019 votes (0.45%)

▪️ Frank Bulira Kabinga of Revolutionary People’s Party (RPP): 44,328, votes (0.42%)

▪️ Robert Kasibante of the National Peasants Party (NPP): 32,224  votes (0.30%)

▪️Mubarak Munyagwa of Common Man's Party (CMP): 30,509 votes (0.29%)

▪️Joseph Mabirizi of the Conservative Party (CP): 22, 274 (0.21%)



“The valid votes altogether of the candidates so far are 10,634,084. Invalid votes are 264,015, constituting 2.42% of the total votes cast," said Byabakama.

The total votes tallied so far are 10,898,099, representing 50.34% of the registered voters. Spoilt votes are 38,223.

The total number of registered voters is 21,649,067 on the national voters' register and the total number of polling stations is 50,739.

Byabakama said EC would be releasing the next set of results at the next session at 2:00pm.

While addressing the nation a day earlier, Byabakama revealed that the winner of the 2026 presidential race will be announced on Saturday, January 17, 2026, before 5:00 pm.

Speaking at the opening of the national tally centre at Lubowa EC headquarters for the 2026 Presidential elections, Byabakama said the constituency of the Presidential candidate is the entire country.

“Accordingly, the EC will tally all the results in the district or cities of Uganda at Lweza and finally declare the elected candidate within 48 hours from closure of polls. This is the venue that was gazetted in accordance with the law for purposes of hosting the national tally centre for the presidential elections,” Byabakama said.

He revealed that the tallying of results started on Thursday and is expected to conclude on January 17, 2026 before 5:00 pm in accordance with the Constitution and the Presidential elections Act.

Article 103 (7) of the Constitution states that, “The Electoral Commission shall ascertain, publish and declare in writing under its seal, the results of the presidential election within forty-eight hours from the close of polling.”

Byabakama said to ensure transparency, access to the tally centre had been granted to duly accredited media personnel, national and international observers, agents of presidential and political parties and other guests.
