MAYUGE - The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has secured the majority of the seats in the Mayuge District Council elections, according to an analysis New Vision Online has done.
While the Opposition secured nine councillors, NRM secured the rest of the 39 seats on the district council.
According to the official results, seven councillors were elected under the National Unity Platform (NUP), one councillor represents the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), and one was elected on the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) ticket. In addition, four councillors won their seats as independent candidates.
The councillors elected on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket are District Woman Councillor representing Kityerera and Bugadde sub-counties Alisati Namukose, Christine Akuku of Jaguzi sub-county, Aisha Namulyasi from Busakira sub-county, Samuel Ntuyo representing Wairasa sub-county, Peter Mukose of Baitambogwe sub-county, Kuzaima Masiga from Bwondha town council and Hannington Samson Ogwang, who also represents Busakira sub-county.
Other Opposition member elected to the council include Emmanuel Okori of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), representing Bukatube sub-county.
The NRM retained dominance in the council after winning 29 seats, including the LC5 chairperson seat, maintaining its strong political influence in the district’s decision making body.
Joshua Mugalya, a resident in Mayuge town council, said the presence of Opposition councillors will enhance debate, accountability and representation of diverse views.
He said they will also help in overseeing service delivery in sectors of health, education, water, roads during their term of office.
