The lower local government council’s elections in Gulu district saw notable gains for the National Resistance Movement (NRM), with several incumbent chairpersons retaining their seats and the party securing a majority of leadership positions.
Out of the 11 sub-counties, six were won by NRM candidates.
Two additional seats were taken by independents sympathetic to the NRM, while the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and its allied independents secured two and one seats, respectively.
In Paibona Sub-county, incumbent Ayoli pa Oyura of the NRM emerged victorious with 576 votes, defeating independent candidates Opiro Ben (201), Ocitti Charles (41), and Watmon Richard (385).
Palaro Sub-county was won by Joel Wokorsch Francis, an independent aligned with NRM sympathies, who secured 1,277 votes in a tightly contested race.
He narrowly defeated NRM candidate David Ngole, who garnered 1,160 votes, along with other contenders.
In Bungatira Sub-county, Ojara Lutada won with 623 votes, followed closely by FDC candidate Acire David with 596 votes.
Independent candidates Acire Walter Odong and Ouma Jimmy received 315 and 37 votes respectively.
Patiko Sub-county recorded a competitive race in which NRM’s Margret Arach Komakech polled 664 votes.
Independent candidate Patrick Komakech won the seat with 1,304 votes, while Francis Ocira received 35 votes.
In Unyama Sub-county, incumbent Kidega Justine of the NRM was re-elected with 811 votes, defeating Okwonga John, who received 301 votes.
Omel Sub-county was won by FDC’s Ouma Vincent with 1,159 votes, beating NRM candidate Akena Moses, who polled 512 votes.
In Paicho Sub-county, incumbent Okello Charles of the NRM was declared the winner in a race that also featured candidates from the Democratic Party (DP) and FDC.
Awach Town Council was won by Jamisco Akena, who secured 1,029 votes, defeating Steven Kal Okoya (417), David Opiro (258), and independent candidates Odoch Makopolo (104) and Opiyo Jamal (52).
In Pukony Sub-county, Patrick Acel Kene of the NRM was declared unopposed after no opposition. Meanwhile, in Owalo Sub-county, FDC’s Tabu Bosco won with 577 votes, defeating Openy Sam (NRM, 425), George Augustine (PFF, 525), and independent candidates Opiyo Phillip Jimmy (128) and Richard Oryema (37).
The district returning officer, Erasmus Kimbowa, commended all stakeholders for their cooperation, noting that the election process was peaceful and smooth throughout the district.
Overall, more than 27 councillors were declared unopposed, all from the NRM.
