Two pilgrims were Thursday, killed at St. Lawrence Nakati on the Kampala-Masaka highway after a bus rammed into them.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, identified the deceased as Olivia Nabakooza and Specioza Nambi, both from Makondo parish in Masaka Diocese.
"The Police at Nsangi are investigating a fatal accident. The unfortunate and tragic incident occurred in the early hours of 1st June 2023, resulting in the loss of two precious lives. The incident took place at St Lawrence Nakati along the Kampala-Masaka highway, involving a UAL 881Z Isuzu bus belonging to Perfect Company and two pedestrians Nabakooza and Nambi," Owoyesigyire said.
He further said preliminary reports indicate the incident occurred at approximately 3:00 am.
"It is alleged that the driver while travelling from the Nsangi direction on a slope, lost control of the vehicle, veering from his lane and tragically colliding with the two pilgrims who were on their way to participate in the forthcoming Martyrs Day celebrations," he explained.
Owoyesigyire said upon receiving the distress call, Kyengera Police Station swiftly responded to the scene of the accident, accompanied by officers from the Nsangi Police Station and the Traffic Police team from Kyengera.

"The necessary protocols were immediately set in motion. The bodies of the deceased were respectfully taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations," Owoyesigyire said.
He revealed that the bus remains at the scene, awaiting assistance from a professional breakdown service to facilitate its removal, and inquiries are underway to ascertain the full details and circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
Owoyesigyire noted that "the loss of Nabakooza and Nambi is a heart-breaking blow, particularly as they were on their way to join thousands of fellow faithful in commemorating the Martyrs Day celebrations, a significant event in the calendar of our beloved country. Their untimely demise is a profound loss not only for their families and loved ones but also for the wider community."
He Kampala Metropolitan Police conveyed condolences on behalf of the Kampala Metropolitan Police traffic department to the families of the victims and assured them that every effort will be made to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
“We will work tirelessly to uncover the facts, determine the cause, and ensure that justice is served.”
"In light of this tragedy, we urge all road users to exercise extreme caution and adhere to traffic rules and regulations to prevent such devastating incidents in the future. We also appeal to the public to support and offer solace to the affected families during this incredibly challenging time," he said.
He also stated that efforts are underway to have the driver who is on the run apprehended.
Nabakooza and Nambi join a growing list of pilgrims that have been killed while on their way to Namugongo.
Over 10 pilgrims have been killed on Jinja and Mityana highways.
