At approximately 4:30 am on Sunday, the foot pilgrims from the Lugazi Catholic Diocese set off from Mary Queen of Peace Cathedral en route to Namugongo. They were officially flagged off by the cathedral administrator, Rev. Fr. Ignatius Kibowa.

The pilgrims began their journey in the dark and are currently making their way to Namugongo, scattered in various groups that extend from Kayanja, Namagunga, and Mbalala to Mukono.

Although these enthusiastic pilgrims have been walking all morning, they still appear full of energy. "Tugende e'Namugongo," they sing with enthusiasm as they continue their march.

The first group arrived in Mukono at approximately 8:00 a.m. They stopped at St. Paul Catholic Church to refresh themselves and get first aid for those who were hurting before continuing on their journey.

By 9:00 a.m., the initial groups were already on the move, while some of the slower packs were still arriving in Mukono.

The entire group of pilgrims is expected to gather in Sonde, where they will meet their bishop, Christopher Kakooza, who will lead them in a triumphant entry into the Uganda Martyrs Catholic Shrine Basilica.

This year, Lugazi Diocese is hosting the Catholic celebrations at Namugongo.

The theme for the 2025 celebration is drawn from the diocesan vision: “Oh Lord, Let Me See Again” (Mark 10:51).
