UGANDA MARTYRS
WAKISO - The Nebbi Catholic Diocese pilgrims have finally arrived in Namugongo after 14 grueling days of trekking, covering an impressive over 300 kilometers!
The pilgrims' unwavering dedication and perseverance have paid off, as they reached the Catholic Martyrs Shrine ahead of the highly anticipated Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations slated for June 3rd.
Their remarkable journey is a testament to their unshakeable faith and devotion.
On arrival at the Catholic Martyrs Shrine, the shrine rector Rev. Fr. Vincent Lubega welcomed them and the archbishop-elect of Gulu Ecclesiastical Province.
The Bishop of Nebbi, Raphael P'Mony Wokorach led Nebbi pilgrims in the triumphal entry to Namugongo. Also present was the Bishop of Lira Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Santos Lino Wanok.
Who are the martyrs?
The Uganda Martyrs are a group of Christians — 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican converts, who were executed between January 31, 1885 and January 27, 1887. They were killed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II.
On the Catholic side, the day is usually organised on a rotational basis according to the four ecclesiastical provinces of Catholic celebrations.
This year, Nebbi Diocese was chosen by the Episcopal Conference to lead proceeding at the Catholic shrine.
Nebbi Diocese, which last hosted in 2007, will host under the theme, As for me and my household, we shall serve the Lord (Joshua 24).
