“The situation at Namugongo shrines remains normal, with our officers deployed to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims. However, our officers have recovered several lost items and persons,” Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said.
“We appeal to members of the public who may have lost any items or family members to visit the Child and Family Protection Unit office or the Criminal Investigation Department tents to recover their lost items,” he added.
He urged all pilgrims to stay hydrated due to the high temperatures currently being experienced in the country.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary,” he said.
In Uganda, Martyrs Day is celebrated on June 3 every year as a public national holiday.
On this day, Christians commemorate the killing of 45 young men, 23 Anglican protestants and 22 Roman Catholics who were executed in the 19th century on the orders of the then ruler of the Buganda kingdom, Mwanga II, for their refusal to renounce their Christian faith.
According to the Anglican church website, Martyrs Day is celebrated to commemorate the sacrifices made by individuals who fought for a noble cause and lost their lives in the process. These individuals are known as martyrs, and their bravery and dedication serve as an inspiration to others.
