WAKISO - In a historic and joyous celebration, Kampala Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere has officially blessed a multi-billion-shilling priests’ presbytery at the Uganda Martyrs Catholic Shrine in Namugongo, Wakiso district.

The May 10, 2026, event was a culmination of over a decade of construction and is a testament to the unity, faith, and progress of the Namugongo Parish community.

The ceremony involved several highlights, including a ribbon-cutting moment and the blessing of the expansive building, which boasts 30 rooms, four conference halls, a large double dining area, and six offices.

Archbishop Ssemogerere also laid the foundation stone for a new pilgrimage centre set to be constructed where the current offices stand. The consecration symbolised the dedication of the entire site to serve a higher purpose: Fostering peace, protection, and spiritual stewardship.

Construction of the storied building began in 2015 during Pope Francis’ visit to Uganda, making it a landmark achievement.

The occasion was graced by numerous dignitaries, including Episcopal Vicar of Wakiso Vicariate Fr Jude Makanga; the Uganda Martyrs Secondary School, Namugongo headteacher, Fr. Dr. Henry Kasasa; and Eng. Fredrick Lwanga; Kira Municipality Member of Parliament-elect George Musisi, outgoing Kira Municipality mayor Julius Mutebi; Sheikh Sowedi Kayongo representing Sheikh Muhamed Galabuzi; former Head of Laity Uganda, Gideon Obbo; and Teresa Obbo, among others. A significant Muslim delegation further underscored the interfaith harmony and communal support behind the project.

Ssemogerere described the completion of the presbytery as “a significant milestone in the Church’s development.”

“It stands as a symbol of progress and unity, providing residence for many religious groups from all over the world and offering a versatile space for various activities and services that will enhance the quality of life for the Martyrs Shrine,” he said.

He thanked President Yoweri Museveni, the Government, Shrine Rector Fr. Vincent Lubega and parishioners for their unwavering support.

Reflecting on the late Archbishop Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, he said, “His vision and determination gave life to this project. Though he is no longer with us physically, his legacy lives on. Let us pray for his soul to rest in peace.”

The Archbishop emphasised that true parish growth lies not just in physical structures but in the faith, unity, and commitment of the people. “Today’s celebration is a clear sign of God’s abiding presence among you,” he added.

A place to call our own

Shrine Rector Lubega said the presbytery would now provide a permanent home for priests serving the parish.

“Before, we were renting elsewhere, but now we have a place to call our own,” he said.

He also thanked the government for its substantial contributions to the project, acknowledging its pivotal role in bringing the dream to fruition. “This is an important occasion for parishioners and pilgrims worldwide who travel here annually to celebrate Uganda Martyrs Day.”

Parish Head of Laity John Nakedde spoke about the parish’s growth, “We have given birth to several parishes, including St. Gonzaga-Gonza Kireka and Bulindo, which is still preparing. We are grateful to our leaders, especially Shrine Rector Fr. Vincent Lubega, for guiding us.”
