Namugongo Anglican Martyrs Site is getting even more drawn into the mood of Uganda Martyrs Day as various categories of Christians start to hold exclusive celebrations in commemoration and honour of the Uganda Martyrs (23 Anglicans and 22 Catholics), most of whom were killed together at the site (in Namugongo, Wakiso district) on the orders of King Mwanga of Buganda on June 3, 1886.

Sunday, May 28 (2023) was the day for the youth. And just as expected, many young people from the various dioceses of the Church of the Province of Uganda gathered at the Martyrs Site (at Namugongo) to participate in the day-long celebration which was organised by the Provincial Youth Office.

The celebration was laden with various activities, such as praise and worship, gospel music/dance and drama, testimonies, and homilies, all centered on the theme: United for Sustainable Service and Growth (Ephesians 4: 11-16).

Speaking to the youth during the function, the theme expositor, Rev. Bbosa Esau Kimanje asked the youth to develop a sacrificial heart that the Uganda Martyrs had and consequently express it through their practical love for their brethren and also, through their zealous commitment to the Church and the country.

He also put it to them to be humble, gentle and patient, to be able to promote and sustain the growth and unity of the Anglican Church.

“Don’t disorganize the Church because of your gifts. Instead, use the same gifts selflessly to serve the good of the body of Christ,” said Bbosa.

The Chairman of the Eastern Cluster Anglican Dioceses (which are leading this year’s Martyrs Day Celebrations), Bishop George Samuel Egesa Bogere also asked the youth to draw inspiration from the life and examples of the Uganda Martyrs.
