KAMPALA - The Uganda Tourism Association (UTA), which represents all tourism trade associations in Uganda, has announced the appointment of Muhereza Kyamutetera as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective October 1, 2024.

Kyamutetera, a seasoned journalist, brings a wealth of experience in strategic development, business growth, marketing, and stakeholder management.

He is also deeply passionate about Uganda's tourism industry. His appointment comes at a critical moment for the sector, as it continues to recover from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yewagnesh Biriggwa (Yogi), President of UTA, expressed her excitement about Kyamutetera’s appointment, stating, "UTA is thrilled to have him on board at this pivotal time. His fresh perspectives and diverse skills are vital for our industry, and he is no stranger to the tourism sector."

She further highlighted the importance of this appointment as a key achievement for UTA’s new board, which took office on June 20, 2024.

"The appointment of a CEO was a crucial milestone we set for ourselves within the first 100 days. I commend the board for working tirelessly to accomplish this," Biriggwa added.

With over 20 years of experience, Kyamutetera has worked with more than 100 brands across various sectors, including tourism, financial services, energy, and healthcare. His expertise spans both public and private sectors, as well as not-for-profit organizations.

As CEO, Kyamutetera will be responsible for advancing UTA's mission of building a professional, competitive, and inclusive tourism sector. This, in turn, will contribute to Uganda's national development agenda.

UTA serves as the private sector's voice in the industry, representing a broad range of members.

These include the Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO), Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association (UHOA), Uganda Safari Guides Association (USAGA), and several others.

Together, the 11 associations represent over 2,000 enterprises within Uganda's tourism sector.

Commenting on his new role, Kyamutetera said, "I am excited to combine my professional expertise with my love for Destination Uganda. I look forward to working closely with the private sector, government, and development partners to boost tourism revenues and household incomes."

UTA remains committed to advocating for policies that promote sustainable tourism and create growth opportunities for its members.
