Uganda's chess contingent was officially flagged off today ahead of the 2025 African Schools Individual Chess Championships, set to take place at Reef Hotel in the coastal town of Mombasa, Kenya.

The team features a strong lineup, including U-7 national champion Matayo Barigye, who will compete in the U-7 category.

While sending off the team, Ivan Nuwamanya, an official from the National Council of Sports, commended the Chess Federation of Uganda for its commitment to nurturing young talent through school-based programs. He noted that the growth of chess in Uganda is evident and promising.

Isaac Otim, the Vice President of the Chess Federation, emphasized the importance of introducing the game to young boys and girls, citing its positive impact on academic performance and cognitive development.

Uganda’s delegation consists of 45 members, including 25 players who will compete across the U-7, U-9, U-11, and U-17 categories. Uganda enters the tournament as the defending champion in the U-11, U-13, and U-15 divisions.

The competition will see Uganda go head-to-head with some of Africa’s best young talent from countries including Kenya (hosts), Rwanda, Burundi, South Africa, Tanzania, and others.

The tournament runs from May 22 to May 29, 2025.
