YMCA Comprehensive Institute produced a disciplined and tactically astute performance to hold Kampala University (KU) to a goalless draw in the first leg of their Pepsi University Football League semifinal at FUFA Stadium Kadiba in Mengo on Thursday.

Making their maiden appearance at this stage of the competition, the Buwambo-based institution arrived as underdogs against two-time champions KU.

However, they showed remarkable organisation and composure, executing a clear game plan that neutralised the hosts’ attacking threat for long spells of the game.

From the opening whistle, YMCA focused on staying compact, limiting spaces and breaking KU’s rhythm in midfield.

Their approach paid off as the hosts struggled to create meaningful chances, with much of the contest turning into a tight midfield and defensive battle.

KU’s clearest goal scoring opportunity came in the first half when Mark Ebong fired a powerful shot towards goal, but YMCA goalkeeper Kelvin Ssenabulya rose to the occasion with a crucial save, parrying the effort to safety before defenders completed the clearance.

The second half followed a similar pattern, although KU increased their urgency in search of a breakthrough. Despite the pressure, YMCA’s defence, marshalled by captain Ratib Ramadan alongside Denis Ochulu, remained resolute, dealing effectively with crosses and balls played into the box.

Late in the game, a worrying moment briefly overshadowed the contest when KU forward Gilbert Wanume and YMCA’s defender Jude Asiku collided heavily inside the penalty area.

Both players required lengthy medical attention and were eventually stretchered off and taken to hospital for further assessment.

Speaking after the match, YMCA head coach Francisco Ejuku lauded his team’s effort and adherence to the game plan.

“It was a very good performance from the players. We did not come here for a draw, but we came with a plan of not losing this game and we achieved it,” Ejuku said.

“We have seen the areas that need improvement and we will work on them before the return leg. I am confident that we will finish the tie at home,” he added.

For KU head coach Vincent Tumusiime, he admitted frustration with the outcome but backed his side to respond in the return leg and get the job done.

“It is not the result we wanted; we wanted to win. Credit to the opponent’s game plan, they frustrated us. But it is still an open tie, and I am confident we will go to Buwambo and win,” he said.

The decisive second leg will be played next Tuesday in Buwambo, with both teams still firmly in contention for a place in the final.
