Jackson Were was re-elected on Friday for his final term as president of the Uganda Golf Union.
He defeated vice president Anthony Agaba and committee member Joseph Okudi, both of whom have served on his executive team.
The Elective AGM drew a large crowd at Entebbe Sports Club. Were received 16 votes, five more than Okudi, while Agaba got just two. After his win, Were said he was honoured to be given another chance to lead UGU and was glad the election period had ended.
“The process of elections will always produce a winner and a loser, but for the sake of the game, it is imperative that we work together,” Were said.
“We shall work with everyone willing to transform the game.” Were, who once captained Mbarara Golf Club, had served as vice president under Moses Matsiko before becoming Uganda Golf Union president in January 2024.
He is known for supporting the selection of junior golfers who later helped Uganda win the Victoria Cup at Kipipiri Golf Resort last year. Were’s team has also managed resources carefully, especially for upcountry clubs. He is also spearheading efforts to see whether Uganda can host the DP World Tour event in the near future.
The new executive committee includes Paul Charles Rukundo, interim board chairman of UGC and a former captain. Rukundo, Adoch Luwum, and NJ Paul, captain of Lugazi Hills Golf & Country Club, were elected to replace Agaba, Samson Agamile, and Okudi at a lively meeting.
The UGU Trustees are Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Amos Nzeyi, and Johnson Omollo, head of the Africa Golf Confederation. The new leadership’s first challenge will be ensuring Uganda retains the Victoria Cup, which starts Thursday at the par-71 Entebbe course.
