Wendy Angudeyo, the outgoing Lady Captain of Uganda Golf Club (UGC), will mark the end of her two-year tenure in style by hosting nearly 200 golfers at the UGC Lady Captain’s Prize tournament this Saturday at Kitante.
The tournament, a flagship season opener for ladies-organised events, traditionally concludes the term of the UGC Lady Captain and her team before a new executive takes over.
A new leadership team, led by incoming captain Gloria Mbaguta, was elected during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on February 27 and will officially assume their roles after Saturday’s event.
The incoming executive includes Mbaguta as Lady Captain, Sarah Nduhukire as Vice Lady Captain, Catherine Wabomba as Secretary, and Suzan Tashobya as Treasurer, alongside other committee members.
Speaking at the tournament’s launch on Monday, Angudeyo reflected on her successful tenure, highlighting the growth of women’s participation in golf during her leadership.
“We have worked as a team, which made the work easier. During my tenure, we welcomed 45 new lady golfers by breaking down negative perceptions about the sport. The numbers continue to grow, and I trust the incoming team will build on this foundation,” Angudeyo said.
She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating, “I am honored to have been UGC Lady Captain for two years. It has been challenging but enjoyable, and I am thankful to the outgoing team for their dedication and support.”
Angudeyo also emphasized the club’s efforts to nurture young talent, offering free golf lessons to junior players during holidays and on Tuesdays and Thursdays as part of initiatives to attract more people to the sport.
The tournament has attracted a host of sponsors, including Fly Dubai, which will provide air tickets to the overall winners. Other sponsors, such as MTN, Crown Beverages (Pepsi), Vivo Energy, Equity Bank, and Fairway Hotel, among others, will offer prizes ranging from fuel vouchers and gift hampers to holiday packages and refreshments.
MTN, in celebration of Women’s Month, will allow golfers and revelers to purchase drinks at a flat rate of sh1,000 each through its MoMo Pay platform.
Last year’s edition saw Japanese golfer Hisae Koshiba (HC 27) and Dennis Kawalya (HC 19) claim the overall titles during Angudeyo’s first year in office. Harriet Kitaka and Peace Kabasweka also made the podium and will be aiming for another strong performance this year.
As Angudeyo passes the baton, the UGC Lady Captain’s Prize tournament promises to be a fitting celebration of her impactful leadership and a platform to inspire the next generation of golfers.
