John Walusimbi has vowed to enhance Uganda’s “recognition” on the global stage during his three-year tenure as chief executive officer of local cricket governing body UCA.

Considering Uganda’s standing in international cricket has never been higher, following qualification for the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, the newly-appointed UCA boss has his work cut for him.

“My Vision is to increase international recognition and operational excellence from national, regional to international fame,” said Walusimbi following his appointment this week on a three-year contract. “I am dedicated to collaborating closely with both Men and Women teams, various stakeholders and community to achieve this vision while promoting excellence, inclusive and sustainable progress.”

Walusimbi takes over from Allan Mugume, who served from 2021 and led the secretariat during one of the most fruitful periods in the history of Ugandan cricket.

Mugume announced he would step down last year at the height of a leadership crisis in the UCA that was characterized by divisions at board level. Mugume was, however, persuaded to stay on following reconciliation talks led by government officials, talks that also convinced UCA chairman Michael Nuwagaba to reverse his own decision to walk away,

The peaceful transition is now in full force, with Walusimbi stepping into Mugume’s shoes months before the Cricket Cranes make their World Cup bow.

“The board has full confidence in John and we look forward to greater heights under his stewardship at the Secretariat,” said Nuwagaba.

Walusimbi also promised to “build on past achievements, leverage innovative programs and strategic partnerships to elevate Ugandan cricket globally,” adding, “I am excited to embark on his journey and grateful for the opportunity to serve”.
