The long wait is over. At 60 years of age, when many are considering retirement, rally driver Moses Lumala has chosen a different path, making a comeback to competitive motorsport.
The former national champion in 1999 and 2003 returned to the cockpit at the Uganda Motorsport Arena in Busiika during the 2025 Boxing Day Sprint.
Driving a Ford Fiesta R5, Lumala teamed up with Mike Mukula Jr. in a race that tested crews on both maram and tarmac surfaces.
The one-day event attracted over 43 crews and was eventually won by Duncan Mubiru. Top drivers Mike Mukula, Ronald Sebuguzi, and Musa Ssegaabwe finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
The sprint began with motorcycle competitions as curtain raisers, setting the tone for a thrilling day.
As expected, the Boxing Day Sprint lived up to its reputation, drawing a mammoth crowd of motorsport enthusiasts. For many competitors, the event provided a valuable opportunity to test their cars ahead of the 2026 National Rally Championship season, which kicks off in March.
Before the opening round of the NRC, the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) will hold symposiums, seminars, and its Annual General Assembly to prepare for the new season.
