Uganda People’s Defence Forces Football Club (UPDF FC) has confirmed the departure of coach Paul Kiwanuka following a disappointing first round of the 2025/26 Uganda Premier League season.
The Army side endured a difficult campaign, registering only three wins from 15 matches and collecting just 11 points.
They currently sit second from bottom in 15th place, above only Calvary FC, who have four points. Mbarara FC occupy 14th position with 13 points, while Buhimba United Saints and URA FC hover just above the relegation zone.
In a statement released on Tuesday, February 3, UPDF FC announced that both Kiwanuka and Defensive Coach Denis Oweka had been relieved of their duties with immediate effect.
“UPDF FC confirms that First Assistant Coach Kiwanuka Paul and Defensive Coach Oweka Denis have been relieved of their duties with immediate effect,” the club said.
New appointments
The club moved quickly to announce replacements as part of efforts to stabilize the team ahead of the second round. Former UPDF FC captain Musa Mudde has been appointed assistant coach, while Juma Nassur takes over as goalkeeping coach.
“Mudde Musa has joined the assistant coaching team, while Juma Nassur will reinforce the goalkeeping department,” the statement added.
Kiwanuka’s tenure
Kiwanuka joined UPDF FC in 2024, initially serving as assistant coach in the second half of the previous season under head coach Pius Ngabo. After helping the Army side secure survival on the final day of the 2024/25 campaign, he was promoted within the technical setup as recognition for his contribution.
The tactician brought experience from stints with Gasogi United in Rwanda, Vipers SC, and Soltilo Bright Stars, but his tenure at UPDF FC failed to deliver the expected turnaround. The club’s poor run of form in the first round appears to have forced leadership to act, with pressure mounting to avoid relegation.
Looking ahead
UPDF FC will begin the second round of the league next week and are scheduled to host Buhimba United Saints FC on Friday, February 13.
