It promises to be a mouth-watering clash as defending champions Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) men take on Makerere University in the first round of the National Super League at Old Kampala Arena this weekend.
The side that better handles pressure and tension is expected to emerge victorious.
Francis Ongom will lead the defending champions in their quest for a clean sheet, while Lusha Lukwago will captain the opposition as they aim to end UPDF’s unbeaten run in what is anticipated to be an exciting and competitive fixture.
Although history favors UPDF, head coach George Isabirye has warned his players against complacency if they are to achieve their goal of keeping a clean sheet in the first round.
“We are ready for the challenge. As defending champions, our aim is to complete the first round unbeaten,” Isabirye said.
The army side boasts an experienced squad, including goalkeepers Abel Mukiibi and Edmond Omony, right wing Bashir Kirani, Felix Mukunzi, left back Umar Issa, and right back Medard Twine.
On the other side, Makerere head coach Ivan Kisa will rely on players such as Francis Katerega, Earnest Kasozi, and Keith Begumisa.
Matches between these two sides have always been thrilling, and the same is expected when they meet in the first round of the league.
Elsewhere, in other men’s fixtures, Uzalendo will face Kawanda, while Wanainchi take on Police. In the women’s league, Ndejje University will entertain Makerere Queens, Makerere University will face Mbogo High, and Prisons will battle UPDF.
