Uganda’s women’s rugby team is confident ahead of the African Women’s Cup, set to kick off on Saturday at Stade Makis in Antananarivo.

The Lady Cranes XV’s will begin their campaign against South Africa as they aim to secure their place in this division of the competition.

"Going into the tournament, we are well-prepared, and the girls are excited. We are carrying the momentum from Ivory Coast into this competition. We may be seeded as newcomers, but one thing is certain, we are here to compete," said team captain Angella Nanyonjo.

Nanyonjo, who was part of the team promoted in Ivory Coast, is looking forward to the big challenge ahead.

"We lost about six of our experienced players to injuries in Ivory Coast. Today, we have a mix of young, fresh talent alongside seasoned players. We are eager to see how that blend plays out, and we are confident we can win," she explained.

South Africa presents a formidable challenge, and coach Franzel September is determined to see his side retain the trophy.

"We travel to Madagascar with one goal. To defend our title. The team consists of both uncapped and experienced players. While the tournament squad hasn’t had much time together, the wider group has been in monthly training camps as part of our the World Cup preparations. This competition is a crucial part of that process," said September.

Uganda last faced South Africa in this tournament in 2019, suffering a heavy 89-7 defeat. They also lost to Kenya and managed only a 15-15 draw against Madagascar.

The opening match will be a tough test, and with the high quality of the South African squad, the Lady Cranes must be cautious to avoid being overwhelmed. Uganda will then take on hosts Madagascar before concluding their campaign against Keny“We expect the same as last year,”
