Three Ugandan rally crews have been officially flagged off for the forthcoming Safari Rally, the third round of the 2026 World Rally Championship (WRC), scheduled for March 12–15 in Naivasha, Kenya.

The crews have pledged to deliver exceptional performances at the event.

Widely regarded as one of the most grueling and iconic events on the global rally calendar, the Safari Rally is not only a test of speed but also of endurance, mechanical resilience, and strategic precision.

Leading the Ugandan charge is the flamboyant and highly accomplished Duncan Mubiru, affectionately known in rallying circles as "Kikankane."

He will be navigated by the seasoned Joseph Kamya aboard a Subaru Impreza WRX STI. They are joined by Oscar Ntambi and co-driver Uthumaan Muhamad, who will compete in a Mitsubishi Evo 10—a vehicle renowned for its durability and agility on rough terrain. Timothy Gawaya, navigated by Francis Wamala in a Seat Ibiza, completes the trio of crews flagged off this week.

“We call upon all rally enthusiasts, both at home and in the diaspora, to rally behind us,” said Mubiru. “This is a world-class event featuring some of the fastest and most technically gifted drivers on the planet. Our objective is not merely to participate, but to compete relentlessly and secure the best possible positions to earn valuable championship points. We carry the Ugandan flag with pride and responsibility.”

Mubiru, Gawaya, and Ntambi will compete in the ARC2 category, the increasingly competitive and visible second tier of the African Rally Championship (ARC).

Uganda’s representation is further strengthened by the presence of reigning ARC champion Yasin Nasser, who will once again be partnered by his trusted and experienced co-driver Ali Katumba in a Ford Fiesta MK2. Although the duo was not present at the official send-off ceremony, they remain central to Uganda’s ambitions at the Safari Rally.

The Ugandan crews were ceremonially flagged off on Tuesday at the National Council of Sports (NCS) headquarters in Kampala by the Assistant General Secretary in charge of Technical Affairs, Milton Chebet, alongside Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) Vice President Hamid Gombe. In a symbolic gesture of encouragement and support, each crew received a cheque for sh10 million to assist with logistical and preparatory expenses ahead of the demanding continental assignment.

The Safari Rally allows drivers to simultaneously score points toward the WRC standings, the ARC classification, and the Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC).

Spanning approximately 1,192.92 kilometres in total, the rally comprises 350.02 kilometres of competitive special stages and 842.9 kilometres of liaison sections. The unforgiving gravel terrain of Naivasha, unpredictable weather conditions, and punishing distances combine to create one of the sternest examinations in world motorsport.
