Winning the Emmy was an American Dream come true for Opio. But the former New Vision journalist also believes it was the perfect farewell gift for Noah.

Joseph Opio made history as the first Ugandan to experience success at the Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday.

And the Ugandan comedian is still basking in the warm afterglow of winning the most prestigious accolade in American television.

"Insha’Allah, this is the first of many to come,'" Opio said. "Because I remember joining Trevor [Noah] and The Daily Show gang to accept the Emmy. But the rest of the night is a blur of Hollywood after-parties and celebrity run-ins. And I don't even drink."

Noah pointedly used his acceptance speech to pay special tribute to Opio, who has written over 1,178 episodes of The Daily Show.

"This story has been so long, so crazy, so wonderful,” Noah said while receiving the award. "I want to start by thanking the crazy Africans who followed me to this country, David Kibuuka and Joseph Opio; David Meyer, my partner in crime, the writers and the team, Roy Wood Jr. from the very beginning."

Winning the Emmy was an American Dream come true for Opio. But the former New Vision journalist also believes it was the perfect farewell gift for Noah.

"Trevor is the first Black person to win an Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series. And he accomplished this historic milestone on Martin Luther King day. I write for a living and even I couldn't have come up with a more romantic fairytale. After seven magical years, Trevor wins and swaggers off into the sunset? It's a real-life Hollywood ending!"

Or as Opio so eloquently put in a viral tweet: "He came. He saw. He conquered. he quit."
