Uganda’s cycling community is brimming with excitement and high expectations as a team of 17 talented cyclists prepares to represent the nation at the World Cycling Championship, set to take place in Rwanda from September 21 to 28.

This prestigious continental event, which will draw elite cyclists from around the globe, presents a significant opportunity for Uganda to showcase its growing prowess in competitive cycling. Notably, this will be the first time the championship is hosted on African soil.

The Ugandan contingent features a mix of seasoned professionals and promising young talent. Leading the team is Germany-based professional cyclist Charles Kagimu, who rides for Team Amani. He will compete in the Individual Time Trial (ITT) category alongside Abdurahman Abdu-noor Lubega and Aziz Ssempijja.

In the Men’s U-23 category, Uganda will be represented by Lawrence Lorot, Jordan Schleck Ssekanwagi, Lomuria Paul, and Mugalu Shafik. The Women’s U-23 squad includes Mary Aleper, Miria Nantume, Florence Nakagwa, Trinitah Namukasa, Losike Lochap, and Kevin Nakato—all of whom have demonstrated strong performances in regional competitions.

The Junior Boys’ category features Hatim Kagaba, Michael Lobo, Miiro Paul—who is affiliated with the renowned Ineos Grenadiers development system—and Magemeso Mensulamu.

Speaking about the preparations, Uganda Cycling Association President Sam Mahaba expressed optimism, citing the advantage of the event’s proximity.

“We are optimistic this time because the championship is just in the neighborhood. Unlike past events where logistics were a challenge, having it hosted in Rwanda makes transportation and planning much easier. This gives us a great chance to prepare adequately and compete at our best,” he said.

With several months remaining before the championship, the Ugandan team is set to embark on an intensive training and conditioning program aimed at delivering competitive performances against some of the world’s top riders.
