US-based Ugandan golfer Denis Asaba, a recent Livingstone College graduate, aims to leverage the learning experiences and opportunities he has gained since relocating to North Carolina in 2002.

Asaba, a former national team player, pursued a degree in Computer and Information Science with a focus on data analytics while also playing collegiate golf at Livingstone College.

He is one of several Ugandan youngsters who joined the college on a sports scholarship (golf). He follows in the footsteps of Ronald Otile, Titus Okwong, Joel Basalaine, Daniel Baguma, and Emmanuel Jakisa, who graduated from the same college in the last seven years.

“Graduating feels amazing, honestly. It feels rewarding to finally see years of sacrifice and hard work pay off. There were moments that were difficult, but making it to graduation is something I’m truly grateful for,” Asaba, who hailed from Tooro Club, said.

“Golf was a big part of my journey as well. I had the opportunity to represent my college and continue growing in the sport while pursuing my education. Personally, one achievement I’m proud of is successfully balancing academics and athletics throughout my college journey. “Balancing academics and athletics was challenging at times, but it taught me discipline, time management, and resilience.”

Asaba is now looking forward to pursuing opportunities in technology, data analytics, cloud computing, and healthcare-related fields while continuing to grow professionally and personally.

“I still have one more year of athletic eligibility left, so who knows, I may consider using that opportunity for graduate school while continuing to play golf,” he stated. “Life in the USA has been an interesting journey, honestly. The environment, weather, food, and lifestyle were all very different from what I was used to back home in Uganda. The weather, especially in the cold seasons, took time getting used to. The food was also different at first, but over time, I adapted and even learned to enjoy trying new things while still cooking some foods from home.

“Adapting to life here was tough at the beginning. Being away from family, adjusting to a new education system and culture, and balancing responsibilities were not easy at all. There were moments of loneliness, pressure, and uncertainty, but through faith, hard work, and support from friends and family, things gradually became better.”
