The Kira Municipal Education Officer, Michael Senkusu, has urged the Uganda Woodball Federation to focus on growing the sport in both primary and secondary schools for a bright future.

Senkusu made the appeal at the closing ceremony of the inaugural Kira Municipal Schools Woodball Tournament, held at Tooto Ndiwulira School in Mbalwa, Kira Municipality, on Saturday.

“We are excited to see that the first tournament has attracted such numbers. This is the way to go, and the Uganda Woodball Federation (UWBF) should focus on growing the sport in schools, especially primary and secondary, for the future,” Senkusu said.

“Train more games teachers so that they can spread the sport to learners. For us, sports officers shall support you by organising workshops. So, give us facilitators,” he added.

He explained that sports shape a person’s life because they build learners to stay focused, committed, and disciplined.

His words were echoed by the area Inspector of Schools, Edward Mubiru, who lauded UWBF for the initiative to start the sport in the municipality and urged children to embrace woodball and sports in general to develop their talents.

The one-day tournament ended with Shimon Demonstration School and hosts Tooto Ndiwulira School Mbalwa emerging as winners.

Shimon won the girls’ category after posting 126 points, beating stiff opposition from Kira Primary (134) and Namugongo Church of Uganda School (136), who came second and third respectively.

In the boys’ category, hosts Tooto School collected 123 strokes to emerge victorious, overcoming opposition from Namugongo Church of Uganda Primary School and Stand Tall Primary School (127).

Fahad Mbagu and April Nanungi won the boys’ and girls’ singles, respectively.

Ramathan Nagoso, who represented Uganda Woodball Federation President Paul Mark Kayongo, lauded the headteachers who facilitated their schools’ participation, as well as the host school.

He said that children participating in sports at an early age helps them identify their talents and develop them into professionals.

The tournament attracted 15 schools, including Busukuma Primary School (Nasana), Lunyo Children’s Centre (Entebbe), Kimwanyi Umea, Stand Tall, St. Francis Bulindo, Kira Primary, Bweyogerere Church of Uganda, Kyaliwajjala Umea, MK Education Centre, Namugongo Parents, Kireka Grammar, and Tooto Ndiwulira.
