Uganda made a dazzling debut at the 3rd edition of the Gymnastics for All competitions held last week in Baku, Azerbaijan, clinching four gold medals and shocking seasoned contenders.
The international event featured five nations—Mongolia, Georgia, Uganda, and hosts Azerbaijan, but it was Uganda that stole the spotlight, securing four golds despite participating for the first time.
Competing in the Under-7 and Under-9 categories, the young athletes showcased remarkable talent and determination. Team leader Yiga Mustafa expressed pride in the squad’s performance.
“We never expected gold, but those young boys and girls were so resilient,” Yiga said.
Team captain Shanice Nakayiwa praised the championship’s competitiveness and credited their success to strong teamwork.
“Everyone gave it their best. Our unity was our strength,” she noted.
In recognition of their achievement, the team was awarded certificates by Association President Harriet Ayaa, who called the accomplishment “a major milestone in the development of gymnastics in Uganda.”
