The Uganda Weightlifting Federation (UWF) has selected a team of seven athletes to represent the country at the 2025 Africa Weightlifting Championship in Mauritius this April.

The team, comprising five men and two women, was announced on Sunday following the national championship, which attracted 30 athletes from six clubs across the country.

Ali Kavuma, UWF Technical Chairman, revealed that the athletes will begin a non-residential training camp on March 16 at Kasubi. He emphasized the need for intensive preparation to ensure the lifters are competitive at the continental level.

“The athletes have shown potential, but they still lack the mental approach required for high-level competition. Concentration and game-reading skills need improvement. That’s why we’re starting the camp early,” said Kavuma, a former Olympian and national team coach.

Kavuma also stressed the importance of discipline and regular attendance during the training sessions, even before the camp becomes residential.

The national championship saw the emergence of new talent, particularly from Kisugu Unified Club. Among the newcomers is David Katende, who lifted a total of 225 kg (110 kg in snatch and 125 kg in clean and jerk).

“I’m thrilled to make the national team for the first time. I’ll work hard to maintain focus and improve my performance,” Katende said.

The competition featured participants from clubs such as Nakivubo, Kasubi, Boltmer, Kisugu Unified, Lira, and Jinja Black Monster.

Selected Team:

Women:

Aisha Namataka (Jinja)

Swabra Mutesi (Nakivubo)

Men:

Steven Ojede (Lira)

David Katende (Kisugu Unified)

Davis Niyoyita (Nakivubo)

The team will now focus on intensive training as they aim to secure medals at the upcoming continental championship.
