Uganda U20 men’s volleyball head coach Joshua Osiya says his team is fully prepared to battle for a coveted spot at the U21 Volleyball World Championship, set to take place in Qatar later this year.

The team is currently competing in the U20 Africa Nations Volleyball Championship in Cairo, Egypt, a crucial tournament that serves as the official qualifier for the global event.

“We are feeling the ground. The boys are ready and in good shape,” said Coach Osiya. “We believe we can top our pool. We’ll give it our best to qualify for the World Cup.”

Uganda has been placed in Group A, alongside hosts Egypt, Algeria, Zimbabwe, and DR Congo. The Nile Warriors have already earned 3 points after being awarded a walkover victory against DR Congo, who arrived late in Cairo on Saturday, September 13.

Coach Osiya emphasized the importance of their upcoming fixture against Egypt, stating, “Our focus is now on Monday’s game against the hosts. I’ve prepared the boys—they’re ready to face anyone.”

The Ugandan contingent consists of 12 players and 5 officials, and will remain in Egypt until the tournament concludes on September 20. Coach Osiya is supported by assistant coaches Boaz Turyahabwe and Edward Bwenje, while team captain Peterson El Nino leads the squad on court.

In preparation for the championship, Uganda played several friendly matches. Although they lost a one-set warm-up to Chazpir (1–0), they bounced back with a strong win over KCCA at Old Kampala Arena before departing for Cairo.

Uganda’s remaining group matches are scheduled against Egypt on Monday, September 15, Algeria on Tuesday, and Zimbabwe on Wednesday. To qualify for the U21 Volleyball World Championship in Qatar, Uganda must finish among the top three teams in the Africa Nations Championship.
