Uganda started the U-18 CECAFA Women Championship in Tanzania on a high note after they defeated Ethiopia 1-0 at the Azam complex.

Allen Nasaazi’s 68th minute saw Uganda break down a resistant Ethiopia side. In the past, Ethiopia has challenged Ugandan teams, and looking at yesterday's victory, it came from a lot of hard work.

Ethiopia tried to see that they bounce back but Ugandans remained solid to pick up the victory. However, coach Ayub Khalifah Kiyingi will be expected to improve his side's striking force since they missed numerous scoring chances.

“It is good that we managed to win but we need to improve in some areas. We believe before we play the next game, we shall improve on those areas. But aside from that, the players have shown a lot of determination and commitment,” stated Kiyingi.

“Facing one of the favourites in the opening game also prepares us well for the competition. In this game, we have tried to address our mistakes in defence. Some of these girls are competing for the national side for the first time and they have tried to show their potential”.

The championship that will be staged between July 25th to August 7th has five teams competing including Uganda, hosts Tanzania, Ethiopia, Burundi, and Zanzibar with games to be played in a round-robin format.

The team did not travel with some of their key players in Shakirah Nyinagahirwa, Hadijah Nandago, and Catherine Nagadya. The Kampala Queens trio is also preparing for CECAFA CAF Women Champions League Qualifiers which starts on August 12.

Midfielder Phiona Nabulime who was named the captain of the team replacing Nyinagahirwa before their opening game, promised a good performance from the team.

“I believe we are still focused as a group despite the changes that have happened. For the days we have been together, the spirits are high and we are ready to do well,” said Nabulime then.
